An AI citation is a numbered, clickable source link beneath or inline with an AI-generated answer.

An AI citation is a transparent attribution of an AI's answer to a specific URL — usually displayed as a numbered footnote `[1]`, `[2]` or as a card with thumbnail and source name. Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Bing Chat are the most citation-heavy engines. ChatGPT cites only when grounded with browsing.
